Snails

(Nancy Rost)

To the burial of a fallen leaf
Two snails are traveling
The female wears a black veil
The male snail not a thing
When they leave it's a beautiful
Autumn evening
But when they arrive
It's already spring

The leaves that had fallen
Have all revived
And the disappointed snails
Regret they didn't drive

But here is the sun, the sun who says
Have a seat
There's beer in the fridge take a load off
Your snail feet
The tour bus leaves tonight
You can see the country, but lose the veil
Said the sunshine to the snail

Those black shells you're dragging
Are too much weight to bear
Take back the colors of life
That you were meant to wear

Then all the animals
The plants and trees
Bust out in songs of summer
With a backbeat from the breeze

And everyone clinks their glasses and toasts the summer night
And the snails stagger onto the bus
They can barely stand upright
They're leaving happy
Their antennas wave goodbye
And the moon shines down upon them from the sky
From the sky
